Predrag Djaković represents Serbia at La Biennale di Venezia 2026

Through Golgotha to Resurrection is an installation exploring memory, displacement, and the possibility of renewal. Archival traces, objects, and sound converge in an open field of experience.

At the centre of Pedja’s practice lies an ongoing exploration of loss and continuity, resonating with the Biennale’s broader reflection on contemporary existence, historical transformation, and collective vulnerability. The work unfolds as an immersive environment that invites reflection without offering a fixed narrative. Material traces and sound interact, allowing individual experiences to connect with wider global processes.

It is composed of three interrelated elements: a large-scale archival display, a sculptural arrangement of more than one hundred vintage suitcases, and a video work featuring a piano improvisation in A minor, composed and performed by the artist. This musical component forms the emotional axis of the installation, shaping its temporal and affective dimension.

The title introduces Golgotha and resurrection not as religious symbols, but as conceptual conditions. Golgotha marks a moment of rupture—when established systems of meaning collapse. Resurrection remains an open question: whether new forms of shared values can emerge after the inherited frameworks lost their credibility. It is this tension that gives the project its contemporary urgency.

The catalogue accompanying the Biennale opening (inserted below) includes photographs with details of the works and selected excerpts from an essay by curator Tomáš Koudela. The complete text will be published in the forthcoming main catalogue.

Fold-out insert from the catalogue, extending to approximately 1.3 metres when fully opened.
